Course Description

The 3-session course continuum, 1 ½ days each session, is designed to teach, train, and provide participants with the information and skills necessary to successfully integrate guided implant surgery and related procedures into their practices.

Session 1, the BASIC session, will provide the foundational knowledge for participants to successfully develop their expertise and skills with guided implant placement procedures.

Session 2 will expose the participant to guided surgery RELATED surgical procedures which will complement the knowledge acquired in Session 1.

Session 3, the ADVANCED session, will further expand and incorporate/integrate the foundational and conceptual knowledge acquired in Sessions 1 and 2.

Guided Surgery Sessions

SESSION 1 – BASIC PRINCIPLES & CONCEPTS | SEPTEMBER 28-29, 2018

REGISTRATION FOR THIS SESSION IS CLOSED.

Session 1 features a guided surgery lecture and hands-on exercises.  After the lecture, participants will learn and understand the following basic principles:

  • Differentiate between straightforward cases and more complex ones.
  • The diagnostic advantages of CBCT. Anatomy to consider when performing guided surgery.
  • Recognize indications for computer-guided implant surgery and contraindications.
  • Soft and hard tissues around implants and teeth.
  • Implement the clinical steps required to execute precise implant placement using stereolithographic guides.

  • Biomechanics 1.
  • Learn how to integrate, “fuse”, models, prosthetic wax-ups with CBCT dicom data sets.
  • Virtually place implants, familiarized with the NobelClinician software.
  • Order CBCT derived stereolithographic guides.

Hands-On Exercises

  1. Diagnose, plan and create a stereolithographic guide for a straightforward implant using the NobelClinician software
  2. Guided implant placement using a stereolithographic guide (straightforward implant), on a model.
  3. Intraoral scanner demonstration.

SESSION 2 – RELATED SURGICAL PROCEDURES | NOVEMBER 2-3, 2018

REGISTRATION FOR THIS SESSION IS CLOSED.

Session 2 features a guided surgery lecture and hands-on exercises.  After the lecture, participants will learn and understand the following basic principles:

  • Wound healing and flap management
  • Understand socket wound healing
  • Understand early implant healing events
  • Rationale of bone grafting after tooth extraction
  • Guided bone regeneration principles (GBR)
  • Extraction socket treatment modalities and indications
    • Socket preservation
    • Ridge augmentation
    • Immediate implants

Hands-On Exercises

  1. Basic socket preservation technique
  2. Mucoperiosteal flap reflection and suturing on pig jaws
  3. Coronally advance and suture a mucoperiosteal flap on pig jaw.
  4. Diagnose, plan and create an stl guide for an immediate implant using the NobelClinician software

SESSION 3 – ADVANCED IMPLANT(S) PLACEMENT | JANUARY 11-12, 2019

REGISTRATION FOR THIS SESSION IS CLOSED.

Session 3 features a guided surgery lecture and hands-on exercises.  After the lecture, participants will learn and understand the following principles:

  • Learn diagnostic factors to consider when placing implants in the aesthetic zone
  • Integrate GBR concepts and guided immediate implantation
  • Review prosthetic options for the edentulous patient, and how to facilitate implants using guided surgery by means of the NobelClinician software
  • Biomechanics 2. Complications.
  • Risk factors for peri-implantitis and prevention protocols

Hands-On Exercises

  1.   Diagnose, plan and create a stereolithographic guide for multiple implants in the aesthetic using the NobelClinician software
  2. Guided placement of multiple implants using a stereolithographic guide (straightforward implant) on a model.
  3. Fabricate a single-unit screw-retained provisional in the aesthetic zone

Faculty

Pedro Trejo, DDS, MS

Dr. Pedro Trejo is a dual specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontics. He received his Certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, and his Certificate and Master Degree in Periodontics from The University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, Texas. He has treated numerous cases involving virtual/guided implant surgeries and published on the subject. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and holds a Clinical Associate Professor position in the Department of Periodontology at The University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston. Dr. Trejo has extensive experience in both clinical and instructional implant surgical and restorative dentistry. Since 1995, he has maintained a private practice limited to Periodontics and Prosthodontics in Houston, Texas.
